ESPN Action Sports is looking for a contract snowboard correspondent with 2-plus years experience to work under the Sport Editors, Editor and Director, assisting in all aspects of site production. The snowboard correspondent will be a key contributor and regular voice of the Snowboarding section of ESPN.com, which entails having a constant awareness and broad perception of what's going on in the shred world, via your own participation, Internet and industry research, networks and contacts, and contest circuits.
Responsibilities include:
* Action sports experience: a snowboarder with a deep working knowledge of riders, history, tricks, companies and PR. Yep, you need to be down – and you need to know if neck tats fall within that category.
* Blogging: News, trends, gear, technology, travel, rider Q&A, service, local scenes, events and contests, original video and photo galleries are all fair game for blog content. Content will be created daily and should be engaging, well-reported, proofread, insightful, original and exclusive to ESPN.com. Each post needs to be accompanied by a minimum of one photo, either shot by you, given to you by a company contact or purchased from a photographer.
* The correspondent will be issued a managed laptop and trained to publish your blogs according to the ESPN.com style guide via a content management system. They will crop, color correct and optimize photos for web usage and upload them to a FTP server. They will build blog entries, story pages with applicable relevant content, photo galleries and top story packages. They will have a keen eye for photography and webpage layout. Mastering the ins and outs of this workflow within the CMS will be key to your success.
* The correspondent will be responsible for writing blog copy, headlines, subheads and captions and is expected to have a history of clear, concise writing experience and the ability to adhere to the tone and style of ESPN.com.
* Weekly edit meetings: These will give you the chance to outline prospective content for the week with your editor in order to avoid content overlap between other contributors and to ensure the content is in tune with the editorial mission of ESPN Snowboarding. As you are entrenched in the snowboard scene, and grinding content on the daily, we'll be relying on you for story pitches about your own sport, as well as insight into what is good for the website overall (content, look and feel-wise).
* X Games participation: The X Games are a giant part of our year, and you'll be a part of the coverage we provide, from determining and building relevant features for our preview package to assisting in on-site coverage and workflow in the production trailer.
Qualifications:
• Highly organized, this person typically has 2-3 years journalism or communications experience in an action-sports related field and the ability to balance conflicting priorities and demands.
• Has fundamental competence in writing, editing, fact checking and reporting and a good understanding of web researching.
• Is a good communicator and has a friendly, interactive disposition and appreciation of action sports’ culture; understands the tastes of ESPN.com/Action’s viewers.
• Is technically savvy and a fast learner: has a basic understanding of HTML and related web-authoring tools and software, Photoshop, FTP servers, PC and Mac operating systems.
• Undergraduate degree or higher in journalism, communications, or a related field preferred.
